Fiesta Ideas for Cinco de Mayo

We’re always looking for good excuses for a Tex-Mex fiesta, since we live in Dallas! If you are looking for inspiration to host a festive party this Cinco de Mayo (or anytime!), we’ve got you covered with hostessing tips, recipes, and décor inspiration for your own fabulous fiesta. From festive menu concepts, to party supplies, attire and activities, we’re sharing some of our favorite ideas to inspire your family’s fiesta and Cinco De Mayo celebrations!

Menu Inspiration

Now, what’s a fiesta without chips and salsa?! Lolli’s Homemade Salsa is a family favorite and must-have condiment on a Tex-Mex menu. Chill overnight in the refrigerator then serve with your favorite tortilla chips as a crowd-pleasing appetizer! These taco salad bites are another fun appetizer option and finger food for kids!

There’s no better way to feed a hungry crowd than with a well-dressed taco and fajita bar that has all the fixin’s (Great for #TacoTuesday nights too!). Check out our Family Fiesta post for step-by-step instructions as well as our Classic “Skinny” Margarita recipe, a must-have at any Tex-Mex celebration!

Why stop at one margarita option when you can have a full margarita bar? From frozen with lime, to pineapple and spicy jalapeño with mango, let your guests decide their own blends! Lay out some festive napkins, and you can’t go wrong! As always, make any drink more fun by serving it “on the rocks” with key lime ice cubes!

Last but certainly not least, every fiesta needs something sweet for dessert! These Choco-Tacos and Sombrero Piñata Cookies look as delicious as they are adorable!

Décor and More

It’s not a fiesta without piñatas! Piñatas can be used for everything from decoration and centerpieces, to party favors or a fun activity for the kids! I hosted a fiesta for SMU Family Weekend last fall, and these large donkey and cactus piñatas served as the “greeting committee”! I also used some tabletop piñatas as decorative accessories around the house. Custom letter and number piñatas are also a great touch for birthday parties or a more personalized theme!

Fresh florals are a simple and beautiful way to brighten your home for any event, especially a colorful fiesta! I love festive vases with yellows, reds, and touches of turquoise throughout the house.

You can also incorporate paper flowers into your décor for a creative spin. I used individual flower crowns to create a floral wreath centerpiece around our foyer arrangement. Guests could then wear one one upon arrival and take home as party favors! I used other paper flowers from La Mariposa Imports in Dallas to add pops of color on other tables:

Party Favors & Games

Lolli and I are big fans of party favors! With this theme, there are lots of options. Mini stuffed piñatas and flower crowns are great for guests of all ages. For adults, we like to tie a fun ribbon and printed margarita recipe around mini Patron bottles as a cute takeaway.

If you are feeling creative, you can even personalize and decorate margarita glasses with a name or theme so that guests always remember the special occasion.  It’s also fun to incorporate a DIY activity that both children and adults will enjoy, such as Tissue Paper Fiesta Flowers.

We had corn hole set up at our last fiesta, and it was great weather to draw people outside! Get colorful beanbags and balloons to tie-in the theme.

Dress the Part

Last but certainly not least, fiesta style is always fun! Embroidered tops, dresses, and colorful accessories from Mexico are beautiful to wear. My dress as pictured below is called the Pachamama Tunic, and Lolli looks lovely in an embroidered dress (similar to the one here) layered atop a classic white button down blouse. Add a flower to your hair or some tassel earrings, and VOILA, YALL!™

We also love anything by Mi Golondrina, a brand WHERE THE GENERATIONS MEET™! If you’re looking for beautiful handmade pieces that represent the beauty and traditions of Mexico, look no further! The origin of each Mi Golondrina piece begins in the small villages of Mexico, hand-stitched by skilled artisans.
