Anna Shuford and Parmelee Miller, Founders of Smockingbird Kids
In 1999, Parmelee and Anna formed a fast friendship in their freshman hall dorm on the same principles that guide their business today: a sense of humor, a strong work ethic and a love of adventure. Along the post-college journey, they parted ways to explore life in exciting cities but found themselves back together when Anna married Parmelee’s brother (“Finally, we’re sisters!”). Parmelee and Anna each had their first child in 2013, and, like so many mothers, enjoyed dressing their little ones. Both girls grew up in the South where hand-smocked clothing has long been a time-honored tradition. Both of their mothers, grandmothers and aunts handmade so many special pieces that their children have worn (We still cannot believe our mothers saved so much)!
In 2014, Anna and Parmelee launched Smockingbird Kids with one major goal at heart: affordability without sacrificing beauty and quality. Smockingbird embodies a timeless, classic style but with a playful, free-spirited look as well. I usually select the same outfits in two sizes for easy coordination. Simple to organize and great for pictures! Smockingbird Kids’ Red Gingham Shorts with Red Knit Shirt is great for “back to school” or any time (and still available!) and the shorts could go with many other summer and fall shirts. Gingham is always dapper, so we selected these navy check shorts and matching smocked shirt for our oldest son as he goes to a back-to-school “prep” camp this week!
